If you're an Indian student planning to study in Canada in 2026, you need a study permit (not a visa — the visa is stamped in your passport; the permit is the document that lets you study). This guide walks you through the entire process in 2026: the new IRCC rules, the Student Direct Stream (SDS) fast-track, the documents you actually need, the cost, the processing times, and the five refusal reasons that account for 70% of rejections.
Canada Study Permit vs. Canada Student Visa: What's the Difference?
Most Indian students (and many agents) use these terms interchangeably. They're not the same:
- Canada Student Visa — A counterfoil stamp or eTA in your passport. Authorises you to enter Canada.
- Canada Study Permit — A separate document issued by IRCC. Authorises you to study in Canada.
You need both. You apply for them together through one application, but IRCC issues them as two distinct things. The study permit has your program name, DLI (Designated Learning Institution), and expiry date.
Common mistake: Students who only get the visa and forget the permit can't register for classes. We've seen this delay admissions by 4–6 weeks.
Who Needs a Canada Study Permit in 2026?
You need a study permit if your course is longer than 6 months at a DLI. You do not need one for courses under 6 months (but you may still need a visitor visa).
A DLI is an IRCC-approved institution. Every public university in Canada is a DLI; not every private college is. Always check the DLI list on the IRCC website before applying — your acceptance letter must come from a DLI or your permit will be refused.
2026 Eligibility Requirements (Updated for Indian Applicants)
To get a study permit in 2026, you must:
- Have a letter of acceptance from a DLI.
- Prove you can financially support yourself — minimum CAD $20,635 for a single applicant (2026 threshold, up from $18,306 in 2024) plus tuition for the first year.
- Have a clean criminal record (police certificate may be required).
- Be in good health (medical exam from a panel physician if you stay more than 6 months).
- Prove you'll leave Canada when your permit expires — this is the most-refused section (see below).
- Have valid biometric confirmation (fingerprints + photo at a VAC).
For the Student Direct Stream (SDS) — the fast-track for Indian students — you additionally need:
- A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD $20,635 from a participating bank (Scotiabank, ICICI, etc.).
- An IELTS score of 6.0+ in each band (or equivalent in TOEFL iBT 83+, PTE 60+).
- A medical exam upfront (not after you apply).
- A letter of acceptance from a post-secondary DLI.
SDS applications are typically processed in 20 calendar days vs. the standard 8–12 weeks.
The 7 Documents You Must Have (2026 Checklist)
| # | Document | Notes | |---|----------|-------| | 1 | Letter of Acceptance from a DLI | Original, dated within 6 months | | 2 | Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) | New for 2024+ — required for most undergraduate & graduate programs | | 3 | Valid passport | Must be valid for the duration of your stay | | 4 | Financial proof | Bank statements (last 4 months), GIC, education loan sanction letter | | 5 | Academic transcripts & certificates | 10th, 12th, bachelor's, mark sheets | | 6 | IELTS / TOEFL / PTE score | SDS requires 6.0+ IELTS | | 7 | Statement of Purpose | Why this program, this university, this career path | | 8 | Biometrics | Done at VFS Global / VFS Canada VAC | | 9 | Medical exam | From an IRCC panel physician | | 10 | Photographs | Per IRCC specifications | | 11 | CV / Resume | Recommended but not mandatory |
The Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) is the biggest change of 2024-2026. Most provinces now cap international student intake and require a PAL before you can apply for a permit. Apply for your PAL the same day you accept your offer.
Step-by-Step Application Process
Step 1: Get accepted to a DLI
Apply to your universities 9–12 months before intake. Fall (September) intake is most popular; Winter (January) and Summer (May) are smaller.
Step 2: Apply for your PAL
Submit the Provincial Attestation Letter request to the province where your DLI is located. Processing: 4–8 weeks. Some provinces (e.g., Ontario) have stricter caps than others (e.g., PEI, Manitoba).
Step 3: Open a GIC account
Choose a SDS-participating bank (Scotiabank's "Student GIC" is the most common). Deposit CAD $20,635. You get the funds in instalments after you arrive in Canada.
Step 4: Get your IELTS / TOEFL score
SDS requires 6.0 in each IELTS band. Test dates book out 2–3 weeks in advance; plan accordingly.
Step 5: Complete your medical exam
Book with an IRCC panel physician. The doctor uploads results directly to IRCC. Cost: ~₹4,500–6,500.
Step 6: Create your IRCC online account
At canada.ca. Choose "Study permit" → "India" → follow the prompts.
Step 7: Upload documents
The portal walks you through 14–18 document upload fields. Common errors: wrong file format (only PDF accepted for most), oversized images, missing translations.
Step 8: Pay fees
- Study permit: CAD $150
- Biometrics: CAD $85
- Total: ~CAD $235 (₹14,500 approx)
Step 9: Submit biometrics
At a VFS Global centre. Book an appointment — slots fill up in metros.
Step 10: Wait for decision
- SDS: ~20 calendar days
- Non-SDS: 8–12 weeks
- Track in your IRCC account
Canada Study Permit Processing Times (2026 — India)
| Stream | Average Processing Time | Notes | |--------|------------------------|-------| | Student Direct Stream (SDS) | 20 days | Fastest, requires GIC + IELTS 6.0 | | Non-SDS (regular) | 8–12 weeks | For students who don't meet SDS criteria | | Post-Secondary Non-SDS | 6–10 weeks | Outside SDS but with GIC | | University Track | 4–8 weeks | Top-tier universities get priority |
2026 note: IRCC has been increasing processing capacity, but July–September (peak intake season) sees 3–4 week slowdowns. Apply by April for September intake to give yourself a buffer.
5 Refusal Reasons That Get 70% of Indian Students Rejected
Based on our 13 years of data from 4,700+ applications:
1. Insufficient financial proof (28% of refusals)
Not the amount — the presentation. Bank statements showing large last-minute deposits get flagged. Pro tip: Show a consistent balance history, not a single big transfer.
2. Weak Statement of Purpose (22%)
Generic SOPs ("I want to study in Canada because it has a great education system") get refused. IRCC wants to know: Why this program? Why this university? Why this career? Why not in India?
3. Doubt about leaving Canada (15%)
IRCC calls this "dual intent." If your profile suggests you'll stay in Canada permanently (close family there, weak ties to India, vague career plan), they refuse. Address this directly in your SOP and study plan.
4. Missing or wrong PAL (12%)
Provinces reject PAL requests if quotas are full. Submit your PAL request the same day you accept your offer.
5. Inconsistent academic history (8%)
Gaps in education, low grades in the last qualifying degree, unrelated work history. Mitigate with a strong SOP and reference letters.
What to Do After You Get Your Study Permit
- Book your flight — Arrive at least 2 weeks before classes for settlement.
- Activate your GIC — Visit the bank branch in Canada with your permit and passport.
- Get a SIN (Social Insurance Number) — Free at any Service Canada office. You'll need it to work part-time.
- Apply for your student card at your DLI.
- Set up a Canadian bank account if you didn't open a GIC.
- Find housing — On-campus is easiest for the first month.
- Register for classes — Some programs require advisor approval.
How Much Does the Whole Process Cost from India?
| Item | Cost (INR) | |------|-----------| | IELTS exam | ₹18,500 | | WES / credential evaluation (if needed) | ₹22,000 | | Medical exam | ₹5,500 | | Biometrics | ₹5,200 | | Study permit fee | ₹9,200 | | GIC deposit | ₹12,75,000 (CAD $20,635) | | Tuition first year (varies) | ₹10–25 lakh | | Living expenses (first year) | ₹8–12 lakh | | Total minimum (excluding tuition) | ~₹13.5 lakh |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work while on a study permit?
Yes. As of 2024, you can work up to 24 hours/week off-campus during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks (no separate work permit needed). On-campus work is unlimited.
Can my spouse come with me?
Yes, on an open work permit, if you're in a graduate program (master's, PhD) or a long-duration undergraduate program. Spouses can work full-time.
What if my study permit is refused?
You can re-apply, but addressing the refusal reason is critical. A second refusal compounds the problem. We strongly recommend a refusal review before re-applying.
Can I apply for PR after studying in Canada?
Yes. The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) are the main pathways. Most A-WAY students who go through PGWP → CEC are PR-approved within 3–5 years of landing.
How long does a study permit last?
Typically for the duration of your program plus 90 days. You must apply to extend if your program is longer than expected.
