IELTS Band 7 in 30 Days: A Realistic Study Plan for Indian Students
Last updated: June 2026 — Written by the A-WAY Test-Prep Team. We've prepared 4,700+ Indian students for IELTS since 2011. Our average student goes from band 6.0 to 6.5–7.0 in 6–8 weeks. A 30-day jump to 7.0 is doable — but only with the right plan. Here it is.
Before You Start: Know Where You Are
Take a full mock test before day 1. Use the official British Council practice test (free, 4 tests available) or IDP's 4-practice-test pack.
Score yourself strictly. Most Indian students over-score by 0.5. Be honest:
| Current band | Realistic 30-day target | |---|---| | 5.5 overall | 6.0–6.5 (not 7.0) | | 6.0 overall | 6.5–7.0 | | 6.5 overall | 7.0 | | 7.0+ | 7.5+ |
If you're at 5.5, this 30-day plan gets you to 6.0–6.5. For 7.0 from 5.5, allow 60–90 days.
The 90-Minute Daily Schedule
This plan assumes 90 minutes of focused study per day, 6 days a week (Sunday off).
| Time | Activity | |---|---| | 0–30 min | Reading (1 passage + questions, timed) | | 30–50 min | Listening (1 section, then check) | | 50–80 min | Writing (1 Task 1 or 1 Task 2 essay) | | 80–90 min | Speaking (1 cue card practice with timer) |
The 4th week swaps to full mock tests every other day.

- Day 30: Light review, no new material, rest
On the day of the test:
- 2 eggs + toast for breakfast (protein + carbs)
- Arrive 60 min early
- Speak slowly in the Speaking test — fast speech = lower band
The Band-7 Speaking Template (Use This for Part 2)
Most students score 6.5 on Speaking because they don't extend their answers. Use the PREP structure for any cue card:
- Point: State your opinion clearly in 1 sentence
- Reason: Give a reason (1 sentence)
- Example: Tell a specific story (3–4 sentences)
- Point (restate): Wrap up (1 sentence)
Example cue card: "Describe a memorable journey you have taken."
"I'd like to talk about a road trip I took with my college friends to Goa in 2024. The reason this trip stands out is that it was the first time I drove on a highway for more than 6 hours, which was both exciting and terrifying. We left Mumbai at 5am to avoid traffic, and by sunrise we were already in the Konkan coastal stretch. The most memorable moment was when we stopped at a small dhaba for breakfast and the owner told us stories about the old highway. It made me realise how much of India you only see when you drive. Overall, that trip taught me that the journey itself can be the destination."
This hits 7.0+ on Fluency, Lexical Resource, and Pronunciation. Use the structure for every cue card.
The Band-7 Writing Task 2 Template
``` [Introduction - 2 sentences]
- Sentence 1: Paraphrase the question
- Sentence 2: Thesis (your clear opinion)
[Body 1 - 1 main idea]
- Example (1 sentence)
[Body 2 - opposing or second main idea]
- Topic sentence
- Explanation
- Example
[Conclusion - 2 sentences]
- Restate thesis in different words
- Final thought / recommendation
```
Band-7 vocabulary to use: "significantly", "predominantly", "a substantial proportion", "it is widely acknowledged that", "this trend is driven by", "in light of the above".
Avoid: "very", "really", "things", "a lot of" (these pull you to 6.0–6.5).
